On Saturday 9th of January, Polish National Theatre will stream its 2015 production of Kordian by Juliusz Słowacki. The streaming will be accompanied by English surtitles. The production of this sacred Romantic text was dramaturged and directed by Jan Englert: a renowned actor, director, and the National Theatre’s Artistic Director. Englert combined Słowacki’s text with other works, including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust and Stanisław Wyspiański’s Hamlet by Jerzy Grzegorzewski.

Słowacki’s text dialogued with Romanticism, Polish politics, and Shakespeare. Englert in his adaptation – praised by Polish critics for its spectacle, beauty, and perfect verse delivery – asks questions about Polishness and its place in Europe. Current political events provide a renewed urgency for these questions.

The streaming will begin at 7pm CET time on Saturday 9 January 2021 and Kordian will be available until midnight 11 January 2021 (CET). Watch it HERE.
