Since its launch in 2016, The Theatre Times won the following awards:
The Joint ATHE-ASTR Award for Excellence in Digital Theatre and Performance Scholarship is awarded each year to an individual or team that demonstrates innovation and rigor in the use of electronic/digital media for the purpose of producing and disseminating knowledge about theatre and performance. The award subcommittee composed the following rationale for this recognition:
“We decided as a committee to give this year’s award to TheTheatreTimes.com, a mostly self-funded digital portal that seeks to globalize theatre criticism by challenging unequal modes of sharing and accessing knowledge. In addition to being a global platform for theatre news and many forms of criticism, TheTheatreTimes offers digitally innovative services such as Performap (interactive digital map that tracks international theatre festivals happening around the world in real-time) and International Online Theatre Festival (free to participate and free to watch). We appreciate their collaborative and decentralized model and the wide range of open access content, especially that which offers coverage for underrepresented regions and people.”
“The Culture Online Award aims to recognize organizations that implement cultural projects in an online format or using digital technology, thus contributing to the development of the cultural industry, society, and the humanitarian space, creating new models of publicity and accessibility of culture.” The purpose of the Culture Online Award is to encourage cultural institutions that actively implement online technologies in their work, as well as significant projects in the cultural field, carried out with the help of the most modern IT resources. Cultural institutions, creative unions, public organizations, associations, bloggers, and other organizations that have implemented their projects in the cultural field were invited to participate. In 2021, a total of 452 projects were submitted from more than 20 countries.
Named in honor of Elliott Hayes, the former dramaturg and literary manager at the Stratford Festival and a dual citizen of Canada and the US, this award recognizes excellence in dramaturgical work on a specific project over the past two years. Eligible projects may include, but are not limited to, production, season planning and implementation, educational programming, or advocacy for the profession.
“We used to believe that theatre needs to be local to be global. But after almost two years, I am more convinced than ever that theatre—as it is now in our interconnected 24/7 global culture—needs to be global to be local. We want to be that virtual space where we reach out across borders, engage with theatre that we might not understand, and step out of our own identities, whatever they might be, to look at the world through someone else’s eyes.”
