20 differently-abled students to stage plays in Bahrain
As a 50-member team of Thanal, Vadakara, heads to Bahrain on Sunday, it is going to be a different experience in the rehabilitation of people who society has marginalized as ‘differently-abled.’
Twenty students of Thanal Smile Special School, Kozhikode, and Thanal Centre for Differently Abled along with parents of some of them, some special school teachers and four residents of Thanal Veedu, an old age home, all under Daya Charitable Trust, will present two plays in various locations in Bahrain from January 9 to 12.
The plays Chiriyilekkulla Dooram and Kalathinte Thalil Orammayude Kaiyoppu have been written and directed by Deepu Thrikkottur, a Thanal faculty member.
The plays will be staged at Indian School in Bahrain on January 9, Kerala Samajam on January 10, Lulu Mall on January 11, and at Mobility International Hall on January 12.
Training
The students have undergone an eight-month-long training for the play. Chiriyilekkulla Dooram is about the rehabilitation of a differently-abled girl who becomes a dancing sensation, while Kalathinte Thalil Orammayude Kaiyoppu is about a mother’s resistance to abort a differently-abled fetus and the struggle such children go through in life.
“The plays have been designed to put across the message on various possibilities of rehabilitation of differently-abled persons,” said Baiji Ayadath of Daya Rehabilitation Trust.
The plays will be staged in English and Malayalam depending on the venue, while a few Arab students are joining the team at the Mobility International Hall, he added.
