Her main area of research is Chinese opera in different media forms from late imperial China to the modern era. She is deeply passionate about the unique all-woman Chinese opera genre of Yue opera, and has been trained in its xiaosheng (young male) role type since she was young. She has a diverse range of interests in theatre, philosophy, music, gender, and cross-cultural communications, as well as in more focused topics such as opera films, cross-dressing performance, the Ming-Qing drama tradition, and revolutionary culture. She likes to bring attention to the perspectives of performers, delving into artistic details that reflexively generate new insights into larger fundamental philosophical and historical concerns. She considers it her mission to help preserve and promote the knowledge and spirit of traditional Chinese theatre.
